"Maria and the New Girl" This requires some explanation, I think. The little girl is being greeted by an angel (and a somewhat curious boy angel) in the afterlife. She doesn't have her wings yet, but she will be very well taken care of by her greeting angel. The crows are there as part of the belief that birds are sometimes seen as spirit guides, and Maria is the name of a patron Saint of youth and victims. It is meant to be comforting in that our children will always be kept safe.
The painting is done on illustration board, no digital work at all. Its hand airbrushed, with some colored pencil and acrylic brush work.

Before I put notices on my art, I had my work stolen and manufactured as products, band logos, company logos, used as covers, and reproduced as "original" reproductions in a couple of countries, all for someone else's profit. The watermark is there to serve as a theft deterrent, and save me time and expenses from having to pursue/stop these people. Putting a small notice at the bottom, or anywhere else where it can be easily cropped, defeats the purpose.
A lot of people just like to collect images, appreciate the art, and have no intention to harm the artist. I have no problem with that. I know lots of people with folders of my work. But, when you put your work up for grabs without notice, its up for grabs to everyone. A lot of artists may do their work as a hobby, or have not had their work stolen for profit, or just may not mind having it used without their input, or control. I make my living as an artist, so I have to protect my interests, even at the expense of a viewer that doesn't like it.
And I can say, you are the only one to ever suggest I remove watermark protection from my images. You don't like the watermark, thats fine. In principle, and your opinion, it takes so much away from the art, you can't appreciate it. I can't do anything about that. The watermark is transparent and fairly unobtrusive. I can't fully appreciate a film, or song from a preview, either. I have buy the full version.
As far as people not buying prints and original art, or never coming back to the gallery, I can assure you, I have not had a problem selling my work. My presence on DA is very small. I do most of my promotions elsewhere. If they like the image enough to buy it, a watermark won't stop them. They know that others have to buy it, too, if they want a decent print of it, so it protects them, too. Also, I would think the majority of people specifically tracking unprotected images are not big print buyers.
I will say, I don't think you fall into those categories, though. You seem to genuinely appreciate, and probably collect, art. I wish everyone was that way. I do understand your opinion, mine is just different.

This was highly promising in the thumbnail, suggesting a well-framed narrative in a single frame. ... And then, this crashing disappointment.

I cannot appreciate fully what you're doing here when the heart of it is obscured with the dA default watermark. Appreciation comes first, before anyone might possibly choose to copy it.

Please consider using something else, less obscuring or on the periphery, if you feel you must have a watermark at all. You can upload a separate version for use in prints. If the heart of your storytelling is blocked, it's far harder to decide whether to even consider buying a print.

I agree Greybird. I don't like having to put copyright notices or watermarks on my work. "Might possibly choose to copy " is an understatement, though. My experiences with copyright infringement, including companies that choose to steal and market products made with my work, leads me to the conclusion it is better to be safe than be sorry. The watermark is cheaper than my attorney. I wish it wasn't that way, though.

Thanks for replying. My use of "possibly," of course, was generalizing.

My main point, though, is that many alternatives exist that are far, far less intrusive and distracting than the dA default watermark. I cannot, literally, see the heart of your visual narrative, on this or nearly any other piece where you've used this.

Because of this, it is impossible for me to appreciate fully what you are doing. I thus cannot comment upon that, nor can I fave it, as much as I would like to do so. I'm almost certainly far from the only one, but I'm among the few who will actually mention it. Many others will simply not visit your gallery again, let alone buy prints.

Please consider using some alternative, as, for example, *Cyzra and *Ironshod manage to do far more subtly.
